What is a bucket list?

A bucket list is a list of things you want to do before you "kick the bucket". Kick the bucket is an old expression which means you are dead. A theory goes that back in the day you would have a potty toilet next to you in hospital. When you die, your body would spasm and kick the bucket. The term Bucket List was made famous for the Hollywood movie starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.

Why should I create a bucket list?

A bucket list or any list is a simple way to keep track of your goals and ambitions. You can choose to write it down on a piece of paper. The other way is to type it up in an electronic Word document. I think a bucket list fantastic way to plan your life. The saying "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail" further proves why it is important to have a bucket list.

Bucket List Hospital Bed

Here is a more important reason. Picture yourself laying on a bed in hospital. You are at an elderly age and it is your last day on Earth. Imagine the sudden realisation that you have not done the things you have always wanted to do. Thinking of this scenario may motivate you to have your own bucket list. Everyone thinks they will live to a ripe old age. However sometimes life does end sooner then we all want. One of the techniques used is to picture the end result and work backwards.

Being on your deathbed  is the final situation for everyone and being born is your starting position. What happens in between should be what you wish to have accomplished before you die. Therefore your bucket list item is the stuff that happens in between being born and dying. Remember that we all have to die. Unfortunately not every lives. That is the point of life.

How Create a Bucket List

How do I create a bucket list?

Now that we know the what and why, the next thing you might want to know is: how do I make one? Your Bucket lists should be a representation of your inner self. The most important thing to understand is that everyone has different tastes, goals and character. Therefore your bucket list will be uniquely different than say your friends. To find out about your inner unique self you need to ask questions.

Lets say you have absolutely zero idea about how to start. A method could be to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. If I had a million dollars today, what would I do?
  2. If I had only one day left to live, what would I do?

With these two questions address the issues of time and money. By hypothetically thinking you have unlimited money, that should free up a common hindrance of most bucket list activities. However by restricting the amount of time left, it puts an urgency on what you do. It means you can't procrastinate and need to come up with an answer on the spot.

Other ways to create a bucket list

Meditation will assist you in learning who you are. The purpose of meditation is to shut down the noise in your head. By doing this it means you can delve deeper into who you are as a person. In today's world it is difficult to simply shut off from the distractions of the world.

One of the reasons I love traveling is that it I find it as a very basic form of meditation. When you travel by yourself you are away from your work, school, family and friends. It provides you with ample time to self reflect.

Regrets of the dying

A few years ago a nurse recorded the common regrets her terminally ill patients had. This was the top 5 answers:

  1. I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me
  2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard.
  3. I wish I had the courage to express my feelings.
  4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
  5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

To accomplish points 1 and 5 you really need to know who you are. To get to know your core, you need to ask yourself the hard internal questions and meditate to get the answers.
