Beijing is the first city to host both the Summer Olympic (2008) and Winter Olympics (2022). The three areas that will host events are Beijing, Yanqing and Chongli.
The Olympic stadiums in 2008 will be used again for 2022. Beijing will host the opening and closing ceremonies. Yanqing will be used for alpine skiing, bobsleigh, luge and skeleton. The town of Chongli in Zhangjiakou, will stage most of the skiing events. Chongli is a four-hour drive north of Beijing.
Around 3000 athletes from over 90 countries will compete in 7 sports. The Winter Olympics first took place in Chamonix, France in 1924. It probably goes without saying that you need to pack warm clothes.
Tickets go on sale, one year out from the start of the Winter Olympics.
First time visitors to Beijing should stay in the Wangfujing Area (王府井). This area is within walking distance to the major attractions of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square.
Chongli: Railway infrastructure is being built to take passengers from metro Beijing to Zhangjiakou South Railway Station.
Closest International Airport: Beijing Daxing International Airport set to be complete in September 2019, three years before the Winter Olympic Games
